- Nancy and I spend New Year’s Eve in bed.
- New Years Day we went to NJ to visit her mom, Dee, who is doing very well at 87. She cooked for us and we just chatted for a couple of hours. It was an enriching visit without the “work” I sometimes associate with family.
- The delicious hot dogs Nancy made last night, with a topping made from peppers, onions, and potatoes.
- My glasses; even if they do hurt the bridge of my nose.
- Breaking Bad. We watched the season one episode “Handfull of nuthin'” last night and it’s just so brilliant: the flash-forward at the opening juxtaposing “no violence” with images from the explosion; teaching the class how slowly occurring change is barely noticeable, like rust gathering under a car, but when it’s fast it can be violent, like an explosion – and he’s using Mercury Fulminate as the example; and then the moment of his change: shaving his head is simultaneously his most vulnerable moment (as seen in Sklyer’s expression) and his strongest (Walt Jr: “Bad ass”). It is also the episode we first hear his alias, Heisenberg, which is itself brilliant.
Many thanks,
